Black is back and with a vengeance. The color black has been known as the ultimate dark color for a long time. Looking backwards though, black was not always so popular. Before 1920, the predominant color was white. After the 1920’s other colors started to appear in the world such as light pastels. Women and men took a fancy to the enhanced color range and this eventually led to the many and varied colors of that we enjoy today.

Black is often described as the negation of color or the lack of all color. Black can be used in conservative or radical settings both. When dressing in very dark colors you must be careful when wearing black because when the colors are too dark, they tend to blend together. Colors that are bright such as red, green and yellow go well with black. Black can make most bright colors literally pop out at you.

The different shades of black are often referred to as ebony, midnight, coal, jet, raven, charcoal, sable, onyx, ink, obsidian, soot and raven.

The diversity of black allows it to represent style, formality, power, elegance, sophistication, wealth, mystery, and modernity while at the same time representing fear, death, evil, anonymity, mourning, sadness, remorse, unhappiness and anger.
